Eva Schiffer (1925-2010), born in Austria, was a professor in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1955-1988. In addition to various articles on 20th-century German literature and numerous book reviews, she is the editor of the correspondence between the eminent former Amherst College political scientist Karl Loewenstein and Thomas Mann (1981, 1982). Loewenstein was born in Munich, Germany and educated at Paris, Heidelberg, Berlin and Munich Universities. He practiced law in Munich (1918-1933) and taught at Munich University (1931-1933). In 1933 he came to the United States and taught at Yale University (1933-1936) and Amherst College (1936-1961).
